The Duchy of Cornwall has drawn up a draft food strategy for Nansledan which aims to encourage the production of sustainably produced food in the Newquay area, while promoting local employment and skills, and celebrating Cornish food culture.
Practical examples include the provision of community allotments and orchards, allotment gardens, an urban farm and ‘edible’ streets planted with varieties of fruit and nut trees.
There are already three community allotments linked to Nansledan, and all on Duchy-owned land. These include the Tretherras Allotment Association, Fairpark allotments, and most recently the Park An Colan Allotment Association in Quintrell Downs where the Duchy has gifted three acres of land, provided sheds and landscaping to help create 30 community allotments.
The Duchy has also gifted seven acres of land on the western edge of Nansledan for the Newquay Community Orchard. This community-led project is establishing a multi-functional park that combines recreation, food production, events, education, apprenticeships and diverse wildlife habitats. It is part of a network of green spaces that will permeate Nansledan.
